The Story of Oludeniz and Belcekiz Beach

 While millions of travelers visit Fethiye every year to witness the turquoise magic of the Mediterranean, few know the haunting legend that gives these world-famous shores their names. Behind the breathtaking beauty of the "Dead Sea" lies a timeless tale of love, storm, and eternal mourning.

The Meeting of Two Souls

According to the legend, in ancient times, ships passing through these waters would anchor offshore and send small boats to the coast for fresh water. On one of these trips, the captain’s handsome son stepped onto the sand and saw Belcekiz. It was a moment where the world stopped. Their hearts were instantly entwined.

From that day on, every time the ship passed the coast, the young sailor would visit his beloved, and Belcekız would wait on the cliffs for hours, searching the horizon for his sails.

The Storm of Destiny

One day, as the ship approached the bay, a violent storm broke out. The sea turned into a chaotic vortex of waves and wind. The young sailor, knowing the area’s secret, begged his father to steer the ship into the calm, hidden lagoon to find shelter. However, the father—blinded by the storm and suspecting his son was only trying to see Belcekız—refused.

The argument escalated into a tragedy. In a moment of rage and panic, the captain struck his son, and the young man was swept away by the roaring waves.

Eternal Stillness

Seconds later, as the ship cleared the jagged rocks and glided into the inner bay, the water suddenly became as smooth as glass—untouched by the storm raging just meters away. But it was too late. Realizing her lover had perished in the sea, Belcekız threw herself from the high cliffs into the depths.

Legend says that the outer beach was named Belcekiz in her memory, while the calm, inner lagoon became Oludeniz (The Dead Sea). To this day, no matter how fierce the storm is outside, the waters of Oludeniz remain perfectly still—a silent, eternal vigil for the lovers who could never be together.
